Book Club…The Mothers (by Brit Bennett)
THURS Feb 8 @ 7:30 pm Host: Viki Deardorff

PLEASE RSVP: email suemstapleton@gmail.com
A powerful novel about motherhood, friendship and finding love with a broken heart. Young Nadia Turner has her world turned upside down when, just after her mother commits suicide, she discovers she’s pregnant with the pastor’s son’s child. Nadia finds solace in her friend Aubrey, but as time goes by, her past decisions invade the present, and a new wave of wounds. The Mothers ambitiously tackles heavy circumstances, but the hope of these young black women and Bennett’s ability to convey the ferocity of what it means have a mother, to be a mother, and to want a mother, make this novel a resoundingly magnetic and essential read.

Bring: $5 ante for Bunco; $3 for L-R-C (exact change appreciated!); and a beverage or snack to share.
RSVP: email Kessa Glisic, kessaglisic@gmail.com, for location details.

About the Games: Bunco is an entertaining, simple dice game, with no experience required. It’s played in multiple rounds with players alternating turns rolling the dice to match the target number. Whoever wins the most rounds is the overall winner. And because players rotate tables, it is a great way to meet and chat with different people. Left-Right-Center is an even simpler game, faster moving than Bunco, and is played at the end of the evening. Did we mention there’s no experience required?

Book ClubNo Baggage: A Minimalist Tale of Love and Wandering (by Clara Bensen)

THURS Dec 14 @ 7:30 pm

Newly recovered from a quarter-life meltdown, Clara Bensen decided to test her comeback by signing up for an online dating account. She never expected to meet Jeff, a wildly energetic university professor with a reputation for bucking convention. They barely know each other’s last names when they agree to set out on a risky travel experiment spanning eight countries and three weeks. The catch? No hotel reservations, no plans, and best of all, no baggage.

Book ClubThis is Where I Leave You (by Jonathan Tropper)

THURS Nov 9 @ 7:30 pm
Host: Peg Smith
RSVP: email suemstapleton@gmail.com for location details.

Tropper writes compulsively readable, laugh-out-loud funny novels, and his fifth book, This Is Where I Leave You, is his best yet. Judd Foxman is oscillating between a sea of self-pity and a “snake pit of fury and resentment” in the aftermath of the explosion of his marriage, which ended “the way these things do: with paramedics and cheesecake.” Simultaneously hilarious and hopeful, This Is Where I Leave You is as much about a family’s reckoning as it is about one man’s attempt to get it together.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) never asked for fame—she was just trying to make the world a little better and a little freer. But along the way, the feminist pioneer’s searing dissents and steely strength have inspired millions. Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, created by the young lawyer who began the Internet sensation and an award-winning journalist, takes you behind the myth for an intimate, irreverent look at the justice’s life and work. As America struggles with the unfinished business of gender equality and civil rights, Ginsburg stays fierce. And if you don’t know, now you know.
