Book ClubBorn to Run (by Bruce Springsteen)

THURS Sept 14 @ 7:30 pm
Host: Sue Stapleton, 138 Burlington St, Lexington. (Park nearest cross street, Hawthorne Rd., or in Sue’s driveway. Do not park on Burlington St.)
RSVP: email suemstapleton@gmail.com

The author describes growing up Catholic in Freehold, New Jersey, amid the poetry, danger, and darkness that fueled his imagination, leading up to the moment he refers to as “The Big Bang”: seeing Elvis Presley’s debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. The author vividly recounts his relentless drive to become a musician, his early days as a bar band king in Asbury Park, and the rise of the E Street Band. With disarming candor, he also tells for the first time the story of the personal struggles that inspired his best work and shows us why the song “Born to Run” reveals more than we previously realized.

Bunco (& Left-Right-Center)

MON Sept 18 @ 7:30pm
Bring: $5 ante for Bunco; $3 for L-R-C (exact change appreciated!); and a beverage or snack to share.
RSVP: email Katie Borgstrom at ktborgs@gmail.com for location details.

About the Games: Bunco is an entertaining, simple dice game, with no experience required. It’s played in multiple rounds with players alternating turns rolling the dice to match the target number. Whoever wins the most rounds is the overall winner. And because players rotate tables, it is a great way to meet and chat with different people. Left-Right-Center is an even simpler game, faster moving than Bunco, and is played at the end of the evening. Did we mention there’s no experience required?

The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
If you’ve ever wondered what your dog is thinking, Stein’s third novel offers an answer. Enzo is a lab terrier mix plucked from a farm outside Seattle to ride shotgun with race car driver Denny Swift as he pursues success on the track and off. Denny meets and marries Eve, has a daughter, Zoë, and risks his savings and his life to make it on the professional racing circuit. Enzo, frustrated by his inability to speak and his lack of opposable thumbs, watches Denny’s old racing videos, coins koanlike aphorisms that apply to both driving and life, and hopes for the day when his life as a dog will be over and he can be reborn a man. When Denny hits an extended rough patch, Enzo remains his most steadfast if silent supporter. Enzo is a reliable companion and a likable enough narrator, though the string of Denny’s bad luck stories strains believability. Much like Denny, however, Stein is able to salvage some dignity from the over-the-top drama. .

It is the present-day, and the world is as we know it: smartphones, social networking and Happy Meals. Save for one thing: the Civil War never occurred. A gifted young black man calling himself Victor has struck a bargain with federal law enforcement, working as a bounty hunter for the US Marshall Service. He’s got plenty of work. In this version of America, slavery continues in four states called “the Hard Four.” On the trail of a runaway known as Jackdaw, Victor arrives in Indianapolis knowing that something isn’t right–with the case file, with his work, and with the country itself. .

The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
In this gripping debut novel, a secret threatens to expose everyone at a thriving Virginia plantation in the decades before the Civil War. Orphaned during her passage from Ireland, Lavinia is placed there as an indentured servant under the care of Belle, the master’s illegitimate slave daughter. Lavinia learns to cook, clean, and serve food, while guided by the love of her new family. In time, Lavinia is accepted at the big house, caring for the master’s opium-addicted wife and befriending his dangerous yet protective son. Grissom’s novel unfolds in a heartbreaking and ultimately hopeful story of class, race, dignity, deep-buried secrets, and familial bonds.
